Getting ready to order my second bag. First bag lasted 5 years before top zipper failed. Non-warranty item (wear and tear) that can be repaired but decided to go with a new unit since old bag was getting a little “long in the tooth”. Pricy but overall a great bag for touring and mounting system is top notch when compared to competition.

Just finished buying my 2nd Arkel handlebar bag; this one is for my wife. I searched high and low for a comparable product and there doesn’t seem to be anything of similar size, with a fixed connecting system that holds the bag solidly and vertically in place, at a similar price point. …and I’m buying Canadian!

I’ve had my Arkel bag since 2005 – and have used it extensively on many bikes, on many rides through the Oregon Coast. The attachment arms are a stroke of brilliance, and I just haven’t seen anything like this with other systems. It leaves much needed hand room for your bars – and you can run your cabling through the mounts for a clean install. So many of the new “bikepacking” systems are stuff sacks, and only work correctly when filled. This can be empty and still hold its shape. I have multiple sets of supports for my bikes, and I just leave them on their bars and snap the bag to the next one.

I’ve had the small handlebar bag for about a month now and can honestly say I’m quite impressed with it. Excellent construction and materials, quality in every way. The mounting hardware is well engineered to be light yet sturdy so I’m confident it will hold up for many years and miles to come. The design and features are well thought out with cyclists in mind. It’s obvious it was designed by people who actually ride bikes and not just some non-cyclist R&D guy/gal. I have no complaints but one suggested improvement. A rigid plastic panel, similar to the one that gives the lid its shape, should be put in the bottom as well under the yellow liner to give the bottom of the bag some support for heavier items. Other than that, AWESOME job Arkel.

I have my bag mounted on the side of my Catrike Dumont. It’s suspended on a mount from Terra Cycle. In it I carry my phone with an extra power pack, a digital camera, extra camera batteries, snacks. In the clear flap I have the maps of the Loop Trail System in Tucson. This bag is of the highest quality.
I did a post about Arkel in my blog: https://trikesterhal.blogspot.com/2017/12/

We’re just about 2 weeks into a tour through Patagonia. It’s been a fairly wet tour so far and I was a little skeptical, but the main compartment of the handlebar bag is fully waterproof. While biking and leaving the bike out in a torrential downpour all night it has still kept the items inside dry. I now feel at ease with my camera, phone and candies 🙂
Cheers,
Jem
