While the north of Costa Rica is a popular bike touring destination, the south is an absolute paradise, although a bit tougher to ride.
During the Christmas holidays, Louise and I (Paul) made a quick, intensive 11 day self-supported tour starting from the capital San Jose to the fabulous Osa Peninsula, named "one of the most biologically intense places on earth" by the National Geographic Magazine.

From the San Jose airport, a ride through the urban jungle of the capital on super busy highways and through heavy downtown traffic was the price to pay in order to hit the jungle proper. A hard climb up the Cerro de la Muerte pass at 11000 feet was followed by an exhilirating descent down to the playa on the Pacific side. From there it was due south by the ocean and then onto steep and deserted dirt roads across the jungle in the Osa Peninsula. This took us to nature wonderland "Corcovado National Park". A boat ride on the ocean and through the mangrove took us back to civilization on the Panamerican highway. Heading back towards San Jose, a one day climb on the smooth asphalt road, to the top of volcano Irazu, brought us up again to 11,000 feet, high above the clouds. That descent will stay in our memories forever.
Special thanks to Debbie and Dave of Costa Del Sol Properties in Dominical http://www.costadelsol-cr.com/aboutus.aspx for their so kind hospitality on New Year's Eve and to Nico of Black Turtle Lodge http://www.blackturtlelodge.com/ for going out of his way in making our stay a memorable one in Puerto Jimenez.
Worth noting is that we didn't see one other soul on a self-supported bike ride during our tour. A German B&B owner had not seen a touring cyclist in Bahia Drake in the two years that she had been there. Come on fellow cyclists, get on your bikes!! Southern Costa Rica is a gem to be discovered on two wheels!!
